SITUATION AND PERSPECTIVES OF SEED PRODUCTION OF TEMPERATE FORAGE SPECIES IN BRAZIL

CARLOS NABINGER

The increasing use of cool season forage species in Southern Brazil has determined the importation of a great amount of forage seeds with a consequent drainage off foreign currency. Empirism still governs the local seed production. Seed yields are meager and far from the climatic conditions and species potential. The lack of valuable information derived from research programs and the unwillingness of using the existing knowledge, be it from local research or from abroad and even from empirical learning, has been identified as the reasons for the small increase in areas cropped to forage species seed production. Although some information exist on some species, these results are so sparse that renders it difficult to put them all-togheter as a package for a given species, so that the producer could follow from sowing the crop up to harvesting. Among the existing problems that must be solved are: identification of climatic zones suited for seed production; collection of the available information for a balance of current needs and allowing for a package for the extension service and the grower; to delineate a research program among research institutions, aiming for information on crop establishment, crop husbandry, polinating insects, harvesting and processing, for the main temperate species and cultivar now in use in the region. The possibilities for this section of the economy are fantastic, if one considers the increasing demand for seed, the soil and climate condition and the profitability of the entreprize. It is urgent to generate usefull information that allows for increased seed yield that hás been imported and in a long run to allow for the opportunity for exporting seed surpluses.
