OVERCOMING Urena lobato SEED DORMANCY
FRANCISCO JOSÉ CÂMARA FIGUEIREDO FLÁVIO POPINIGIS
The Urena lobata seed shows a certain kind of dormancy soon after harvested and during the time of storage. It is believed to be due to water impermeability of the seed coat. As a result, low percentage of germination is observed when germination tests are done without previous seed treatment. Acid and mechanical scarifïcation and other methods used to break seed dormancy were studied. Results indicated that submersing seed in concentrated sulphuric acid for 30 minutes or in boiling water (100°C) followed by keeping seeds at 30oC for 40 minutes, were the best treatments.
