In Brazil, there is considerable potential for the establishment of a specialized pastures seed production industry. To be successful, it is vital that producers select ideal regions for this venture. In this respect, consideration must be given to various climatic, edaphic, agronomic and economic factors operating within the regions. This paper reports on the importance of agronomic factors affecting the choice of suitable areas, and uses data collected from experiments conducted in Planaltina (Federal District), Prudente de Morais and Felixlândia (State of Minas Gerais). The species and ecotypes were: Zornia latifolia CIAT 728, Stylosanthes hamata CIAT 147, Stylosantes capitula CIAT 1405, CIAT 1078 e CIAT 1315, Andropogon gayanus CIAT 621 and Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk and the parameters measured were pure seed yield, phenology and the incidence of pests, diseases and weeds. The results showed that the area of Felixlândia would be suitable for seed production of S. capitata and Z. latifolia. All 3 regions would be suitable for the production of seed of B. decumbens whilst Prudente de Morais and Planaltina would be ideal for A. gayanus.
