The evolution of seed tecnology research in Brazil is described since 1917 to today. Today's situation, as well as future perspectives are analysed. Recommendations are made, among which the establishment of a more effective coordination, of short term training for seed researchers, the establishment of a more efective system of communication among researchers and between these and the private sector, the concentration of basic research in the universities and the establishment of an information channel specific for seed.
