SITUATION OF PASTURE GRASS SEED RESEARCH IN BRAZIL
RAMIRO VILELA DE ANDRADE
The inadequate supply of forage grass seed in Brazil, especially of the genera Hyparrhenia, Brachiaria, Setaria, Panicum, Stylosanthes, Glycine, Centrosema and Macroptilium, is in part because of restrieted regulations in seed import, and because the farmers are now demanding greater amount of seeds to prepare new and improved pastures for their animals. The forage grass seed sold in Brazil is usually of poor quality. To solve this problem, the EMBRAPA, a state firm affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture, has intensified the research in forage grass seed. However, the number of researchers working in this area is still small. The majority of the research conducted is in the area of seed production technology, but studies should envolve other important areas like drying, classification, storing, germination, vigor, mechanical injury and seed pathology. Also, it is important to determine the ecological zones suitable for forage seed production. The cerrado region, for example, has showed a great potential for forage seed production especially if irrigation can be supplied to guarantee better yields and better seed quality.
