RESEARCH ON FORAGE LEGUME SEEDS
FRANCISCO H. DUBBERN DE SOUZA
spite the fact that the forage potencial of several leguminous species be widely recognized in Brazil, very little research has been done to solve or to attenuate the various problems associated to the production of seeds of these species. Among these problems are the lack of information on botanical characteristics of importance to seed production, on specific climatic requirements for flowering and seed production, high susceptibility to diseases, high incidence of weeds, and harvest difficulties. Research and seed production done in other countries, however, show that certain management practices are able to minimize these problems. Thus, the evaluation of the effect of preflowering cuts, of the utilization of physical supports to the plants, of harvest methods, of the specific fertilizers applications, of growth regulators, the determination of ideal harvest times and of regions most appropriated to seed production, could result in great benefits to the forage legume seed production industry in this country.
