PRODUCTION OF QUALITY GUARANTEED TREE SEED
ANTÔNIO R. HIGA; JARBAS Y.SHIMIZU
The use of high quality seed is a basic requirement for the approval of (re)forestation projects seeking the benefits of tax exemption. In Brazil, genetic quality guaranted tree seed, according to the degree of control exerted during production are classified in the following classes: seed from adequate species/places, from adequate species/places collecting areas, from production areas and from orchards. A description is presented of the production method of each class. Seed production problems to receive research priority are pointed, including the identification of juvenile characteristics correlated to future productivity, the solution of dificulties related to: vegetative propagation, selection of the place for the instalation of an orchard, isolation from undesirable polen, phenology in orchards, design and selection of minimum number of clones and families, controlled pollination and increase in productivity.
