WHEAT SEED RESEARCH IN BRAZIL

AROLDO GALLON LINHARES

The paper draws a comparison betwwen the development of wheat seed production in Brazil and the evolution of research on seed production technology. Areas in which research is placing more emphasis are discussed being that plant sanity is the most outstanding due to the greater centering of work on it. Situations of important areas, and which envolved in production without corresponding research development, such as drying and storing activities, are also considered. The need for evaluating the quality of seed produced through sampling at sowing time is emphasized. References are made to the thesis research conducted in Brazil and their importance is stressed. Since there are no specific limiting problems, the paper points out that wheat seed research in Brazil has been marked by its contribution to the improvement of the production process. Some problems, such as the evaluation of seed-borne inocula, have been raised as lacking investigation. Due to the pecualirities of wheat cropping in Brazil, the paper concludes that seed research should be even more led towards the improvement of the production system and the direct obtainment of advantages by the farmer.
