INFLUENCE OF FRUIT AGE AND STORAGE PERIOD ON SQUASH SEED QUALITY

Seeds of squash, Cucurbita moschata Duch., cv. 'Menina Brasileira', were collected from fruits of various ages (15, 25, 35, 45, 55 and 65 days after anthesis) and were either not stored or stored for different periods of time (2,5 and 7 weeks) under ambient conditions. These were then tested for germination (both in laboratory and greenhouse) and for vigor (first count, radicle lenght, and average number of days for seedling emergence). Results showed that there was an increase in germination and vigor with increased age of the fruits, and, within the same age group, these qualites increased with length of time in storage. Thus, these increases were a function of age and period of time in storage.
