Fifteen production systems were tested involving jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) for seed production and corn, intercropped on different planting dates and compared wíth their pure stands. Piramex (high stand) and Piranão (low stand) varieties were used for the maize. All the intercropped systems were more efficient than the respective monoculture. There was no significant difference between the maize varieties performance either intercropping or in monoculture. The best proction systems found was the maize planted in the rainy season (january) and the jute intercropped between the maize rows, a month later. Aspects related to interespedfic competition, diseases incidence and economiics are also discussed.
