obtained by different laboratories and/or seed analysts. Due to this fact, a research was carried out to compare different dividing methods so as to select the most suitable one to obtain working samples of annual ryegrass (Loiium multiflorum Lam.) seeds. The experiment was set at the Seed Laboratory of the Department of The variation on the performance of seed samples dividers is one of the factors affecting the uniformity of the results Agriculture and Horticulture of the College of Agriculture "Luiz de Queiroz", University of São Paulo, in Piracicaba, São Paulo State, Brazil. The performance of the following dividers were compared: Boerner, Soil and Gamet. Four lots of seeds, differing mainly as to physical purity were used. The following determination were made for each working sample obtained; purity analysis, germination, pure live seed and germination first count. The efficiency of each dividing methods was evaluated by calculating variances and coefficients of variation. According to data analysis and the interpretation of the results the following conclusions were obtained: a) The attainment of reasonable uniformity of working samples, from lots of annual ryegrass seeds, depends on the method employed for sample homogenization and division; b) The Boerner and the Soil dividers showed the most uniform performance in the attainment of working samples of annual ryegrass seeds; c) The methods of division were more efficient as the quality of the analised lot improved.
