Wheat (Triticum aestivum L) basic seed production at EMBRAPA's (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) Basic Seed Production Service, is obtained largely by means of contracted growers and, in smaller amounts, in the Service's own farms, localized at Ponta Grossa, Dourados and Brasília or also in research station farms. After harvest, seed is imediately collected to the Service's own Seed Processing Plants, where they are conditioned and stored untill distributed. Quality control activities include contrators selection, land preliminary inspection, and crop inspections at pre-flowering, flowering and pre-harvesting phases, at which, field conditions are verified in relation to the quality standards in force. After harvest and processing, quality level obtained is checked by laboratory tests proceeded on seed lots' representative samples. Seed obtained from early multiplications of genetic seed, are internally called "pré-basic"; for these, standards are stricter regarding genetic purity, and this is additionally evaluated after processing, in field "post-control plots". This evaluation is carried out by the technical team and in the premises of the wheat National Research Center, at Passo Fundo, RS. Wheat Basic Seed production at SPSB started in 1977 with 769t and evolved to 1540t in 1978, 1588 in 1979, 2793t in 1980, 3048t in 1981 and 2192t in 1982; these volumes were produced in the Service's units at Pelotas and Passo Fundo (RS), Ponta Grossa (PR), Dourados (MS), Sete Lagoas (MG), Goiânia (GO) and Brasília (DF). Some of difficulties faced by SPSB include the inaccurat or incomplete description of some cultívars, variation or non-uniformity in few cultivars and in many cases, the inexistance or lack of genetic seed.
