SONIA M. DE SOUZA, PAULO C.F. LIMA E MANOEL DE S. ARAUJOV
This work had the objective of finding out a methodology for extraction of seeds of ?Algaroba? (Prosopís jultflora (SW) DC) in large amounts, at low costs, without damages to germination. The treatments were: manual extraction; immersion of pods in 1000C water for 4, 6, and 8 minutes; scarification with sulphuric acid 2, 5, and 10 N for 25 hours; scarification with chloridric acid 1 N for 24 hours; furnishing of pods to goats; milling in hand-mill and in forage machine with pods oven and sun dried. The amount of seeds obtained, damages, percentage seed germination, index of germination velocity, human labour required and total cost of processing were evaluated. Hand-mill and forage machine extraction methods from sun-dried pods showed the least human labour requirement and total cost, although had showed the smallest amount of un damaged seeds. The manual processing showed an intermediary labour requirement and total cost, but the greatest amount of un damaged seeds.
