The single segments of the research/farmer system are analysed, such as agricultural research, breeder seed production, cultivar recommendation, basic and improved seed production. The bottleneck points of the system, prior to basic seed production, are considered together with possible solutions. Also, the basic seed production segment is discussed, concerning its organization, planning, production system and quality control; the experience of EMBRAPA, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, is reported.
