SANITARY AND PHYSIOLOGICAL EVALUATION ON COTTON SEED PRODUCED IN THE STATE OF MINAS GERAIS

MARIA APARECIDA DE SOUZA TANAKA E GILDA DE PÁDUA PAOLINELLI

This work was performed with the objective of evaluating the sanitary and physiological conditions of cotton seed produced at two regions of Minas Gerais State, over a twoyear period (1980/81 and 1981/82). The sanitary evaluation was made by the blotter method and the germination and vigor according to ?Regras para Análise de Sementes? (1976). In 1980/81 12 genera of fungi were detected in 14 samples examined (cultivars IAC-17, Minas Dona Beja and Minas Sertaneja). The results showed predominance of Fusarium moniliforme, Fusarium spp., Chaetomium sp. and Aspergillus sp. The average germination was 49% for samples from North Minas Gerais, and 37% for samples from the ?Triângulo? region. None of the samples were above the official germination standard (70%) for cotton seed produced in the State. In 1981/82, 13 genera of fungi were detected in 28 samples examined (cultivars IAC-17) with predominance of F. moniliforme, Fusarium spp., Trichothecium roseum and Aspergillus sp. It were also detected the following patogenic fungi: Colletotrichum sp., Macrophomina phaseolina, Botryodiplodia theobromae and Phoma sp. At the Northern region 93% of the samples were above the official germination standard for the State with an average of 79%. At the ?Triângulo? only 28,5% were above the standard, with 68% germination on average. The results showed that the best quality seed was produced at North Minas Gerais specially in 1981/82, possibly due to better climatic conditions for seed production as compared to the ?Triângulo? region where heavy rains generally coincide with the harvest season.
