PRODUCTION OF CASSAVA CUTTINGS 1N SANTA CATARINA STATE, BRAZIL

LUIZ FERNANDES MARQUES E EUCLIDES MONDARDO

The existing problems of cassava crops in Santa Catarina, Brazil, compel the search for germplasms which present genetic resistance to the main diseases as bacterial blight and antracnosis. After being tested for diseases and root yield, it is necessary to distribute the best cultivars to farmers, in order to prevent crop failure. It is also necessary to reproduce the germoplasms which have been experimentaly tested. Giving attention to both research and producer needs, some multiplication fields of cassava stems have been planted at Itajaí and Urussanga Experiment Stations, where crop is managed according to recommendations of the cassava production manual. This research started in 1977, parallel to general experiments up to final recommendations. Accompanying the experimental trials, a continuous stem production program has been conducted, for distribution to elected famers through the extension service EMATER/ACARESC. This service is also encharged of assistance and redistribution of the recommended cultivars. This method has spread the cassava crop throughout the Santa Catarina State, reaching during the last three years 400ha of cultivated land where selected cultivars free of diseases have been planted.
