CONTROL OF THE PINK BOLLWORM IN COTTONSEED WITH METHYL BROMIDE AND PHOSPHINE
IVANILDO M. SANTIAGO, EDGARD A. BITRAN E TÉRCIO B. CAMPOS
Experiments on the control of the pink bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella (Saund.) in cottonseed were carried out in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. Cottonseed bags and infested material were fumigated inside metallic chambers at reduced pressure with methyl bromide and under plastic sheets with methyl bromide and phosphine. In the chambers at reduced pressure methyl bromide was efficient against pest infestations at dosages of 24ml per cubic meter during 4 hours, but showed a little toxicity to seeds. Phosphine fumigation under plastic sheets, provided efficient control of the pink bollworm, specially when applied a rate of 2g/m3/72 hours. Methyl bromide fumigation under plastic sheets for 24 hours presented toxicity problems, reducing the germinative capacity of seeds.
