INFLUENCE OF THE SEED SIZE ON THE PRODUCTION AND QUALITY OF

PEDRO EUGÊNIO ADAMO, RUBENS SADER E DAVID ARIOVALDO BANZATTO

This experiment was carried out in the experimental area of the Agriculture College of Jaboticabal (UNESP - Sao Paulo State, Brazil) to evaluate the influence of seed size on the seed production and quality of sunflower at field conditions. The seeding was made at November 14, 1981, on soil previously prepared and fertilized with 150kg/ha of the formula (NPK 4:31:6). Hybrid seeds were used of the cultivar Contisol, gently provided by the Seed Company Contibrasil, located at Cravinhos, São Paulo State, Brazil. The seeds were classified according to size, in five classes: 1. control, ungraded seeds; 2. seeds retained in 7mm screens, long; 3. seeds retained in 7mm screens, short; 4. seeds retained in 6mm screens, long; 5. seeds retained in 6mm, short. Were evaluated the production, 100 seed weight, germination percentage, speed of emergence, seedling dry matter and also the oil content. the obtained data did not present any significative difference between treatments according to the analysed parameters, and there was no influence of seed size on the production, germination and vigor of the sunflower seed.
