GERMINATION CAPACITY AND VIGOR OF COWPEA CULTIVARS
ARISTÓTELES FERNANDO FERREIRA DE OLIVEIRA E RUBENS SADER
Studies were carried out to evaluate the seed quality of 13 cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) cultivars that had been stored for 27 months. Relationship between 100 seed weight and germination and vigor were analised, as well as the varieties responses to the proposed tests for evaluation of seed quality. Germination ranged from 20 to 87%. The accelerated aging test indicated that some of the cowpea cultivars showed a good level of resistance to deterioration with the germination after aging ranging from 0,57 to 71,38%. There was a positive correlation between 100 seed weight and vigor, showing that 100 seed weight is a factor of great importance to be considered in the selection of cultivars with high seedling vigor level.
