HERMINIO MAIA ROCHA
Plant introduction in Brazil for research purposes is an important actívity for improvement of the genetic resources not only by increasing the genetic base of the commercial crops but also by diversifying the national agriculture. CENARGEN has implemented a structure with physical facilities and trained personnel in order to accomplish this work according to the international criteria. The Decree n0 24.114 of April 4, 1934 and several complementary regulations have established the necessary procedures regarding introduction, exchange and quarantine of plant materials. For research purposes CENARGEN has enjoyed the privilege of gettlng concession from the Ministiy of Agriculture for bringing in plants and plant products from overseas wíthout hindrance. Some lmportant plant pathogens which are absent from the country have been detccted on imported material and íntercepted through the inspection and quarantine service at CENARGEN. The work done at CENARGEN has given the necessary support to the breeding programmes of the national agricultural research stations and also has contríbuted to limit he dissemínation of pathogens through seeds.
