The limiting factors for the expansion of cassava cropped area in the State of Santa Catarina are bacterial blight, antracnosis and cassava low multiplication rate. The Empresa Catarinense de Pesquisa Agropecuária S.A. (EMPASC) has carried out a programme on the multiplication and distribution of recommended cultivars. This programme is aimed at obtaining higher performance and efficiency of the cassava multiplication system, as well as at making a suitable amount of cassava cuttings available to farmers. Cassava demonstration sites (conducted in collaboration with the Empresa de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural - EMATER/ACARESC), cassava plantations (conducted in a cooperative system with selected farmers) and the work developed by EMPASC Experimental Stations are also part of this programme.
