EFFECT OF HARVEST TIME AND STORAGE UNDER AMBIENTAL CONDITIONS, UPON ANDROPOGON GRASS SEEDS QUALITY

ALBERTO DOS REIS CONDÉ E JOSÉ GARCIA

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of harvest time and storage periods upon Andropogon grass seeds quality. Seeds were harvested at EMGOPA (Zootechnic Station of Goiânia) at 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50 and 56 days after initial head emergence (lHE). The harvest was made by hand and the seeds were dried under shadow to 10,0-11,0 percent of moisture, paked in cotton bags and stored under ambiental conditions for 0, 4, 8 and 12 months. Periodicaly seeds were submited to the following determinations: germination, first counting of germination, emergence, pure germinating seeds, percent of pure live seeds and weight of 1,000 seeds. The analisis of data led to the following conclusions: a) seeds of andropogon grass were dormant in all of harvest time; b) seed dormancy was over coming by four months of storage; c) seeds that showed best storage potencial were those harvested 32-38 day after the lHE.
