BREAK OF DORMANCY IN SEEDS OF LEUCENA

MARCO ANTONIO A. PASSOS, TARCÍSIO VIANA DE LIMA E JOSÉ DE LIMA ALBUQUERQUE

The objective of this paper was to determine a single and effective process to acelerate and uniformize seed germination of leucena (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam) DE WIT). The applied treatments were: hot water (100 centigrade degree), sulphuric acid (95,0%) and impact on solid surface. The sulphuric acid treatments were the most effective treatments in terms of percentage of germination. However, the hot water treatments during four seconds and sulphuric acid durings two minutes did not show significant dífference between themselves. The seeds treated with impact on solid surface showed a smaller percentage of germination than the untreated check, apparently due to internal injuries. The sulphuric acid treatment during four minute demonstrated the highest efficiency, with a 99,0% of germination.
