The objective of this research was to determine the conditions for seed germination of Quaresmeira (Tibouchina sellowiana Cogn.), related to the substract, temperature and light effect. The substracts were: filter paper, Musci, sand and soil; the temperatures were 20, 25 and 30oC in laboratory, using a photoperiod of twelve hours. The conditions of luminosity tested in the germination were continuos light, total darkness and photoperiod of twelve hours. The germination tests were assembled utilizing only pure seeds, separated under lens. The best result was filter paper as substract at the temperature of 30oC when the number of germinated seeds was bigger betwen the tested substract. The continuos light and the photoperiod of twelve hours permited a bigger number of germinated seeds than the germination in the darkness. In the darkness the germination rate practically disappeared.
