The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of encapsulating small native seeds of the Serra do Mar (weight less than 1mg) in hidrophlic gel. The encapsulation was hased on the gel formation of sodium alginate in calcium chloridc solution. Seeds of Leandra cardiophylla, Tibouchina holosericea and Tïbouchina pulchra were used in this study. They were tested for their germinative capacity when recently pelletized and when pelletized and stored for 30 days aI 4oC. Although the encapsulated seeds had shown storage dificulties, significant gains were obtained concerning easiness in handling the seeds and possihility of introducing input in lhe pellets. Pelletized seeds presented acceptable germinative capacity as compared to in natura seeds. This way, pelletized seeds were assured proper conditions for their germination and for the development of the seedlings on the soil. The technique tested with some improves, has large application potencial in forestry and agriculturaI pratices.
