SEED QUALITY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NORMAL AND OPAQUE-2 MAIZE POPULATIONS
CARLOS ALBERTO DOS SANTOS MARQUES E RUBENS SADER
The objective of this work, carried out at the Seed Analysis Laboratory of the Agriculture College, Campus of Jaboticabal - UNESP, S. Paulo State, Brazil, was to evaluate dífferences between Normal and Opaque-2 maize populations in relation to the seed qualities as, 100 seed weight, germination and vigor tests measured by speed of emergence, seedlling dry weight matter and accelerated aging. The Laboratory test was carried out based on the Seed Analysis Rules (Brazil, Mmistry of Agriculture, 1980). The Analysis of the data in general has permítted to conclude, that the Normal maize population was, on average, superior to the Opaque-2 maize population, although in some case these differences were not statistically significant. The Opaque-2 version of ?piranão? population presented 100 seed weight superior to the Normal version although not statistically significant. The ESALQ-VD Opaque-2 population with selfed seed (S1) showed superiority in relation to the original seed (S0) from the same population for germination and vigor with comparable value to the normal population.
