CHEMICAL CONTROL OF Phoma sorghina IN RICE (Oryza sativa L.) SEEDS

The development of P. sorghina epidemics in field rice is more frequent in prolonged rainy seasons when the association of the pathogen with the rice seeds becomes more important. The objectives of the present experiment were to evaluate the effectiveness of seed fungicide treatment for the control of the causal agent of the glume blight of rice and the possibility of developing a disease rating scale in the differentiation of rice seeds carrying the pathogen. Among the fungicides used, Benomyl showed to be more effective than Iprodione and Captan in the control of P. sorghina. No statistic differences were observed between the fungicide evaluation methods (severity and incidence) with regard to the efficiency of the pathogen?s control. However, future studies must be carryed out on the studies of new chemical products and/or dosages and on the effect of the remaining inoculum in the seeds on germination, seedling vigor, and on the development of epidemics under field conditions. The used disease rating scale did not collaborate for the differentiation of the rice seeds associated with the pathogen.
