A laboratory trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of processing and latter storage on the quality of common bean seeds, in the ?Escola Superior de Agricultura de Lavras?, Minas Gerais State, Brasil, in 1982. Seed samples of the cultivar ?Carioca?, harvested in 1982 were taken at receiving step, after passing through precleaning, air screen and gravity separator machines. They were packed in paper bags and stored in dried room for 90 days. At 30, 60, and 90 days of the storage period data of germination ratio, abnormal seedling and dead seeds were taken. The experimental design was a randomized 5 x 3 factorial, with four replications. The seeds showed higher germination ratio when passed through the gravity separator machine. There was high decreasing of the germination ratio, increasing of abnormal seedling and dead seeds, after 30 days of storage. The results showed that processing improves quality of seeds, but it can reduce its viability, when stored for long time, due to mechanical injury.
