TETRAZOLIUM TESTING FOR RUBBER SEEDS

MARIA MAGALY V. DA S. WETZEL, SÍLVIO MOURE CÍCERO E BEATRIZ C. DA S. FERREIRA

Although the rubber tree (common, name of Hevea brasiliensis) is commonly vegetatively propagated, the seedlings are obtained from seeds. So, it is important to know the seed viability, but so far a fast and specific method for these seeds, has not yet been developed. The tetrazolium test was then applied to seed samples from different places such as: Belterra, PA, Cametá, PA e Ilhéus, BA. The salt concentrations were 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0% for periods of 2 and 3 hours in a oven at 40°C. The best results were obtained using seeds with more than 30% moisture content, but at this humidity the separation of the tegument is difficult. The period of imbibition and exposure to the TZ salt were found to be directly correlated. The best concentration for result interpretation was 0.5%. At the same time, germination tests were performed in germination at 30°C for about 30 days.
