LIMITATION OF AVAILABLE WATER DURING PRE-HYDRATION AND DEHYDRATION ON GERMINATION AND VIGOR OF AGED SOYBEAN SEEDS

SHIOW SHONG LIN E GABRIEL VIEIRA FERRARI

Seeds of three soybean varieties (Bragg, IAS-5, Planalto) were aged in 80% R.H. at 25°C for 30 and 60 days. The seed germination and vigor decreased significantly with aging. The pre-hydration and dehydration treatment increased significantly on seed germination and vigor of three varieties. The reversal of the effect of aging in seeds of Bragg and Planalto on germination was accomplished by 6 and 8ml of water per gerbox with a piece of blotting paper during pre-hydration for 24 hours. The eletrolyte leakage reduced by limitation of water during pre-hydration and dehydration, however, there were no significant diference among the water level of 4, 6 and 8ml. The effect of aging was showed clearly by increasing on eletrolyte leakage of aged seeds. The correlation among the germination, vigor and eletrolyte leakage was significantly for all seeds of three varieties, however, the seed germination and vigor were correlated negatively with eletrolyte leakage.
