EVALUATION OF SEEDS AND PLANTS OF WEEDY RICE

ELCIO LUIZ PERRETO, SILMAR TEICHERT PESKE E JOSÉ GALLI

The study was undertaken with the objective of evaluate physical and physiological quality of weedy rice - Oryza sativa L.. - seeds. lt was used 19 phenotypes and the cultivar BR IRGA 414, obtained from commercial rice fields. Each phenotype was represented by 40 plants and harvesting done with 20-25% MC. The evaluation was on cycle; plant height & shattering; seed width, thickness and length; germination; germination under could conditions and dormancy. Based on the results the following conclusions were taken: a) there is a tendency of the phenotypes with low length/width index of the grain, to present better emergence performance, under cold conditions, and high dormancy; b) it would be possible to select phenotypes with at least three of the following desired attributes: loss shattering; cold tolerance; high length/width index; earliness and plant height: e) the length and thickness of weedy rice seeds overlaps with those from cultivar BR IRGA 414 although in some phenotypes the width does not overlap; d) as increases the difference in seed moisture content, from those shattered and not shattered, there is a tendency to increase the shattering percentage of the weedy rice.
