SURVIVAL OF Pyricularja oryzae CAV. ON WHEAT SEEDS UNDER DIFFERENT STORING CONDITIONS

AUGUSTO CÉSAR PEREIRA GOULART E FERNANDO DE ASSIS PAIVA

The survival of Pyricularia oryzae on wheat seeds under different storage conditions was evaluated during twelve months period at EMBRAPA-CPAO, of Dourados, MS, Brazil. Four samples from Anahuac wheat cultivar showing 14, 12, 10 and 6% of seed infection with P. oryzae were stored under laboratory, dry chamber and refrigerator conditions. Montly, subsamples were drawn and the incidence of P. oryzae was determined for each storing condition through the blotter test. The percentage of infection was maintained or slightly decreased when the seeds were stored in refrigerator or dry chamber. Under laboratory conditions, the incidence decreased sharply after six months reaching maximum level of 1.5% after twelve months. It is concluded that survival of P. oryzae is affected by enviromental factors. Low temperatures promoted benefic effect on this survival.
