The objective of this work was to study the effects of three dosis of N (0, 20 and 40kglha), parcelled three times (at sowing, at tillering and at panicle emergence) on Avena strigosa Schreb cv. Comum crop. The experiment was carried out under field conditions on a Ultisol (distrophic Terra Roxa Estruturada) in Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brasil. It was sown on 04/29/91 and harvested on 10/17/91. All plots received lime and P and K fertilization. Plants characteristics, yield components, seed yield (kg/ha), seed protein content and seed quality were evaluated at harvest. The N fertilization affected the plant height, the panicle lenght, the seed yield, the seed production per plant and the hectolitric weight, but not the others characteristics. The nitrogen applied at tillering stage showed the best result, where the treatment with 20kg/ha of N at sowing and 20kg/ha at tillering was the most interesting, and the treatment without N at sowing and 20kg/ha at tillering presented the second position.
