The Brazilian Pine (Araucaria angustifolia Bert. O. Ktze) presents seeds of low natural longevity and with recalcitrant caractheristics, causing problems to long term conservation. The aim of this work was to study the effect of desiccation on germination of seeds from two natural populations from Southern Brazil. Seeds with and without seedcoat were desiccated in a chamber at 22°C/15% RH for periods of 0, 6, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 144 hours. After the treatments, germination test and moisture content determination were performed. The results confirmed that the species has recalcitrant seeds and that the ?lowest safe moisture content?, below which germination do not occurs, is around 38% for seeds with or without seedcoat.
