OCURRENCE OF STORAGE FUNGI IN DISCARDED SOYBEAN SEED LOTS IN THE STATE OF MINAS GERAIS IN 1989/90

GUSTAVO FERREIRA DE A. PEREIRA, JOSÉ DA CRUZ MACHADO, ROBERTO LUIZ XAVIER DA SILVA E SONIA MARIA ALVES DE OLIVEIRA

This work was carried out to detect the occurrence of storage fungi species in discarded soybean lots in the State of Minas Gerais, as well as, to evaluate the effects of the fungi as the cause of reduced seed quality. Seeds were incubated on salt-agar and on absorbent paper. Through these methods it was possible to detect, identify and quantify the species as Aspergillus candidus, A. flavus, A. glaucus (Group), A. niger, A. ochraceus, A. restrictus e Penicillium spp. Samples from seeds reduced in the ?Triângulo Mineiro? region, where the majority had standard germination under 75%, were the most infected. Although there was detected a relatively high frequency of occurrence pratically all the species found on the seeds, the action of those fungi was not the main cause for low seed quality in those lots, once the correlation coefficient between percentual of lots germination and fungi evidency was always lower than 0.5.
