Two experiments were carried out in 1991 at the FCAV/UNESP, Jaboticabal-SP, Brazil, in order to study the effect of two sowing dates (Apr. 02 and 23, 1991) and two management systems (without cutting/cutting the plants 60 days after sowing) on seed production (kg/ha) and physiological quality as evaluated by the standard germination and vigor (accelerated aging) tests of bristle oat (Avena strigosa Schreb) and UPF-2, UPF-3 and UPF-7 oat cultivars (Avena byzantina C. Koch). A split plot design was used with three replications. The results, using secondary cariopsys, showed no effect of genotypes and sowing dates on seed germination and vigor. However, the cutting management reduced germination and vigor values. Seed yield (kg/ha) was statisticaly different (P < 0.05) for both sowing dates and management systems.
