EFFECT OF PACKAGE TYPE ON THE PRESERVATION OF Andropogon gayanus SEEDS

ALBERTO DOS REIS CONDÉ E JOSÉ GARCIA

This work had the objetive of evaluating the effect of different materiais used in the manufecture of seed packing containers or seed quality of Andropogon Gayanus, cv, Planaltina, stored under natural environmental conditions, for a period of one year. The experiment was conduced the zootecnology Experimental Station of Goiás Enterprise for Agricuitural Research - EMGOPA, located at Senador Canedo Country, State of Goiás, Central Brazil, from June, 1986 to June, 1990, The seeds were hand harvested at physiological maturity, dried under shadow to 11,1% of moisture, and than packed in different containers made of cotton, kfraft paper, polyetilene, polypropilene and jute. The experimental design was a completely randomized 5x5 factorial arrangement (five types of containers and five storage periods, zero, three, six, nine, and 12 months). Periodically, at three month intervals, seed samples were evaluated for: germination, pure germinating seeds, first count, emergence, moisture, and 1000 seed weight. The analysis of data indicated that, altough polyetiliene had a tendency to better preserve the seeds for a period of 12 months, under natural enviroments concertives there was no significant difference between the different treatments, in terms of storage efficiency.
