SEEDLINGS OF Bixa orellana L. - URUCU (BIXACEAE)

TÂNIA SAMPAIO PEREIRA

Bixa oreIlana locally known as ?Urucu, has been broadly cultivated in the tropics due to its wide industrial use. Seedling production is obtained exclusively through seeds, although very small number of research papers, concerning its seeds germination, have been published. For this reason studies were carried out to determine ideal temperature and substrate conditions for seed germination. Constant temperatures of 25°C and 30°C, as well as 20-30°C and 15-35°C alternate temperatures and the three substrates, filter paper vermiculite and paper towel. The morphological study of lhe post-seminal development allowed the characterization of the normal seedling and also of the main patterns of abnormality for this species. Results also showed no significant statistical differences among substrates. The ternperatures of
25°C, 20-30oC, and 15-35oC are suitable for seed germination tests.
