EFFECTS OF THE MANAGEMENT OF ANNUAL RYEGRASS (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) SEEDS PRODUCTION
DIRK CLAUDIO AHRENS E JOSÉ CARLOS DE OLIVEIRA
- The purpose of this work was to study the feasiability of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) seed production in forage areas. The experiment was carried out in Ponta Grossa, Paraná. Three cutting frequencies (zero, one, and two) and three nitrogen levels (0, 60, and 120kg N/ha) were studied, in a 3 x 3 factorial design with three replicates. Cutting had no influence on the number of fertile tillers, total number of tillers and seed production. Ammonium sulfate aplication (60 and 120kg N/ha) affected positively those parameters, as well as seed purity and germination. There was a higher pure seed production with the 60kg N/ha withont permite cutting treatment, followed by the 60kg N/ha one cutting treatment. The average of one thousand seeds weight was significantly lower with cutting and nitrogen fertilization treatments than on that of cutless and zero nitrogen. It was concluded that it was possible to produce annual ryegrass seed if the forage was cut until the beginning of spring, and that the nitrogen aplication improved the seed quality and productivity.
