MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SEEDS AND FRUITS OF NINE WEED SPECIES OF Ipomoea (CONVOLVULACEAE)
DORIS GROTH
The deficiency of specialized bibliography cause great difficulties and changes in the identification
of the species. Therefore, through the characteristics of the seeds and fruits were elaborated two taxonomical
keys, morphological descriptions, drawings and photographies in order to help the identification of Ipomoea alba
L., I. coccinea L., I. indivisa (Vell.) Hall., I. lacunosa L., I. nil (L.) Roth., I. pes-caprae (L.) Sweet., I. rubiflora
L., I. turbinata Lag. and I. wrightii Gray. The morphological descriptions of the seeds were based mainly on the
colour and the pilosity of the seed coat (surface) and hilum area, size and outline of the hilum, which are very stable
characteristics in the genus Ipomoea. The seed shape vary with the amount of seeds developed in the fruit and is
not a consistent characteristic. Are included the common names and the crops or the agricultural seeds in which the
species is considered as a weed or a weed seed.
