FRUIT AND SEED CHARACTERIZATION OF SIX SPECIES OF GALLERY FOREST IN THE FEDERAL DISTRICT
NEIVA BEATRIZ ANTUNES, JOSÉ FELIPE RIBEIRO E ANTONIETA NASSIF SALOMÃO
This study was done with three woody species (Vochysia piramidalis Mart., Tapirira
guianensis Aubl. and Talauma ovata St.Hil.) and three shrubs Tococa formicaria Mart., Miconia
pseudonervosa Cogn. and Miconia chamissois Naud.), from Gallery Forests of Planaltina/DF, Central
Brazil. These species were chosen because they are phytossociologically important in the Gallery
Forest. The aims of this study were: to characterize the species life form, and to verify some of the fruits
and seeds morphological characteristics. For each one of the species it was evaluated the mean height
of an adult individual, the number of fruits per plant and seeds per fruits, and size, weight and color of
these seeds. The shape of the fruits, seeds and seedlings are displayed in drawings. The shrubs M.
pseudonervosa and M. chamissois and T. formicaria were in average respectively 2,54m, 2,35m and
1,75m height, and the trees V. piramidalis (10,70m), T. guianensis (17,10m) and T. ovata (14,80m) height.
The shrubs have presented similar morphological characteristics with several non dry fruits (average
200), several seeds per fruit (average 30), small seeds (average 0,78mm length) and low weight (mean
for group of thousand seeds 0,21g). The trees have showed relatively big seeds (average 6mm
length) and heavier seeds than the shrub seeds (seed weight mean 0,14g). The only winged seed
species was V. piramidalis. The species T. guianensis and V. piramidalis have presented an enormous
quantity of fruits (average 400 000) with quite few seeds in each fruit (average 3). While T. ovata
showed few fruits per tree (average 20 fruits) with many seeds in each fruit (average 140). Vochysia
piramidalis showed dry fruits with winged seeds and the remaining species showed fresh fruits.
