REHYDRATION OF BEAN SEEDS IN A GERMINATION CHAMBER

CARLOS DA LUZ E LEOPOLDO BAUDET

The objective of this study was to determine a methodology for rehydration seeds and
drawing the rehydration curves to be used on checking seed moisture meters to various seed moisture
levels. Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seed cv. Turrialba 4 were used and a seed germination chamber was
adjusted to 25°C and RH=94%. The seeds for rehydration were placed in two nylon screen trays, one at
the top and another at the lower level, and the seed moisture content was determined by oven (105°C3°C
for 24 hours), at intervals of two hours in the first 12 hours and at intervals of 12 hours until reached 72
hours. In that conditions the conclusions were: 1) it is possivel to rehydrate Phaseolus bean seeds
inside a seed germination chamber, with a linear increase of the seed moisture content at a rate of 0.11%/
hours; 2) the rehydration of seeds is not significantly affected by the position of the trays inside the
germination chamber.
