THE EFFECTS OF HYDRIC STRESS SIMULATED WITH PEG (6000) OR MANNITOL ON GERMINATION OF Stryphnodendron polyphyllum Mart. SEEDS

Stryphnodendron polyphyllum is a tree species known as ?barbatimão?, among other
names. It is a Mimosoideae native from ?cerrado? formations and with a widespread distibution in
Brazil. In effort to obtain further ecophysiological information about this species, a water stress was
simulated with PEG and mannitol solutions. This species also germinate at low water potentials, as -
0,6MPa (PEG 6000) and -1,3MPa (mannitol). The germination rate was early reduced, from -0,1MPa for
both solutions. The relative frequences have polimodality from -0,2MPa and -0,1MPa for mannitol and
PEG respectively, presenting a displacement to the right of the main mode.
