The essay was carried out at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in the agricultural year of 1996, in order to verify the influence on the correction of seeds number to be sown, through the results of germination and vigor tests aiming to establish the stand and others agronomical characteristics of the soybean. The seeds were harvested on stage R8 and 45 days afterwards. After the harvest, they were stored for a period of five months and then submitted to the tests (germination test, emergence in sand, accelerated aging and field emergence), being treated with fungicide before the sowing. The tests for accelerated aging and field emergence were the most adequate to correct the seeds number to be sown aiming the setting of the ideal stand when the seeds presented low germination. In a general way bigger stands were associated to higher plant heights and final stand and smaller production by plant; however, the plants survival percentage were not influenced by the stand. The production was either kept constant even with great variations on the plants population, due to the compensation that occurred on the production by plant.
