OCCURRENCE OF Claviceps purpurea ESCLEROTIA IN REYEGRASS (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) SEEDS PRODUCED IN RIO GRANDE DO SUL STATE, BRAZIL

One hundred samples of the fiscalized seed lots of Lollium multiflorum, from 26 seed producing counties in the Rio Grande do Sul state were examined for the presence of Claviceps purpurea sclerotia. Measure and weight of sclerotia and samples were also determined. The results indicated that this fungus is widelly spread at the producing counties. Ninety two percent of the examined seed samples were contaminated with sclerotia of this pathogen, which ranging from 0.001% to 0.314% of the seed samples weigth.
