WATER ABSORPTION SPEED OF SOYBEAN AND CORN OF SEEDS DURING STORAGE
FABIANNE VALERIA DE SOUZA E SILMAR TEICHERT PESKE
The objective of this study was to verify seed moisture oscilation in different depth inside a bag and to determine its relationship with physiological quality during storage. It was used soybean and maize seeds in three depths inside a 50-kg package, at the periphery, 6cm and 12cm, respectively. The storage conditions were relative humidity from 60 to 90% and temperature from 18 to 28°C for a five month period. The samples were collected in intervals of seven and 15 days interval making a total of 17 storage periods. Seeds were evaluated by moisture content, germination, accelerated aging field emergence and cold tests. The results obtained allow to conclude that: the speed of water absorption by soybeans and maize seeds was higher for seeds located at the packaging border; seeds located inside a bag, even having different water absorbtion velocity, tend to have the same moisture content after four months in storage; Seed physiological quality is influenced by its position inside a bag.
