PUMPKIN SEEDS PACKED IN THE VACUUM

ROGERTO ANTONIO BEE E ANTONIO CARLOS SOUZA DE ALBUQUERQUE BARROS

This work was done with the purpose of verifying the viability of pumpkin seeds stored in impermeable bags, in the vacuum, with 13% of moisture, that is bigger than recommended for vegetables seeds, and also reduce expenses drying up to 6%. It was also evaluated the efficiency of hidrochloric acid and water for washing out seed mucilage. After that, seeds were bagged in impermeable polietilene bags Starvac, dimension of 20 x 25cm with five layers and stamped in the vacuum in Cryovac System and stored by eight months (march to december/98). The physiological and sanitary quality of the seeds was evaluated each 60 days. The results showed the viability of the use of vacuum for storing vegetable seeds; washing seeds with water has the same efficiency as using acid; seeds in vacuum almost maintain moisture content during storage and the use of acid for washing seeds can propitiate more incidence of storage fungi, of genus Aspergilus and Penicillium, than water.
