Drechslera spp. SURVIVAL IN Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst.ex A.Rich.) Stapf SEEDS STORED IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

CONCEIÇÃO APARECIDA PREVIERO, DORIS GROTH E JACIRO SOAVE

There is few information about the seed health quality of grasses sowed by Brazilian farmers. Drechslera spp. have showed affinity with such seeds. The objective of this research was to evaluate the longevity of Drechslera spp. in Brachiaria brizantha seeds, stored in commercial warehouse, during 12 months without environmental control at Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The effects of the following factors were also analyzed: two types of packages (multi-wall paper bags and polyethylene bags with 194 µm wall), scarification (with sulfuric acid in commercial scale and non scarified seeds), initial seed maisture content (6-7%, 10-11% and 13-14%) and fungicide (with oxychloride of copper and without treatment). The experiment was conducted in split plots design with three replications, in completely randomized blocks. The results allowed to conclude: the initial moisture 6-7% and 10-11% help the longevity of the fungi in seeds; the copper oxychloride fungicide was efficient in reducing the pathogen, mainly in not scarified seeds; the shorter longevity was obtained with initial moisture 13-14%; different packages had different influence in the pathogen longevity; Drechslera spp. kept the viability for 12 months of storage.
