CHARACTERIZATION AND QUALITY EVALUATION OF TEAK (Tectona grandis L.f.) FRUIT PRODUCED IN MATO GROSSO, BRAZIL

Fruits of thirteen lots of Tectona grandis L.f., teak, from three seeds produced areas (SPA) from Cáceres Florestal (Cáceres Florestal Company, Inc., Mato Grosso State, Brazil), were qualified in relation to pureness, water content, weight of thousand fruits, uniformity, hectoliter weight, insect infestation and vigor, by the thirtieth day emergence seedlings, number of seeds by fruit, using the cutting test method. A homogeneous behavior of these fruits characteristics was not observed, because they differed from lots and provenance. The average values obtained were: water content 8.3±0.2%; weight of thousand fruits 0.681±0.032kg; hectoliter weight 0.2705±0.003kg/hl and number of fruits to kilogram 1471±72. The lots showed, on average, 1/3 of fruits with no seeds and 47.3% with one seed. In relation to size, 82.2% of the fruits ranged from 12.5 to 16.0mm. The lots vigor ranged from 29.7 to 70.8%, with an average of 58.7%. Fruits without emergence, 69.6% of then have no seeds and 27.9; 2.4 and 0.1% respectively with one, two and three seeds.
