One of the main features that confer high quality to the hybrid corn seed is genetic
purity, in which one of the major cause of contamination is the occurrence of self-fecundation of
the female parent. Yet, there is no accurate and fast methodology for detecting such contamination.
Thus, aiming the evaluating the potential of morphologic marker in distinguish the single-cross
hybrids from their parents corn hybrid seeds by means of morphologic, this study was developed
in the laboratories of Seed Analysis and in the field of Agriculture Department at the Universidade
Federal de Lavras, (UFLA). Evaluation were carried out with hybrid UFLA 8/3 e UFLA 7/4 by
different investigators on the stages of seedling, flowering plant and ear. The percentage of errors
and the standard deviation of the results observed of the three investigators were calculated. To
verify the deviation significances of the normal curve that occurred during the process of evaluation
of the three investigators, the chi-square test was used. The morphologic characteristics enabled
to distinguish and identify the single-cross hybrids from their parents and plants from the female
parental in relation to hybrid plants. The development stage most appropriate to evaluate the
genetic purity is on the stage of seedling for the hybrid UFLA 7/4 and ear evaluation for the hybrid
UFLA 8/3.
